From Broadmeadows to Ancre outlines formation of the 22nd Battalion, largely from the Broadmeadows Depot, voyage on the Ulysses, 7 May - 10 June 1915, from Port Melbourne to Alexandria; describes speculation about their destination, the march to Heliopolis, leave in Cairo, voyage on the Scotia from Alexandria to Lemnos and the Osmanieh, 4-5 September to Gallipoli; trench life, early anti-gas equipment, secret evacuation, return journey from Madras to Marseilles and to Pozieres, inspection of the Battalion by Lord Kitchener, 31 March 1916, provision of relief at Fleurbaix and Bois Grenier, first steel helmets and gas respirators, move South to join Somme offensive, march through Amiens with citizens cheering them as the first Australian troops to pass and a description of the Battle of Pozieres.
